SMEs must adapt their business models to workable models to survive

Sam Walton once said, “Outstanding leaders go out of their way to boost the self-esteem of their personnel. If people believe in themselves, it’s amazing what they can accomplish” and according to Andrew Carnegie, “No man will make a great leader who wants to do it all himself, or to get all the credit for doing it.”

I’m sure some of us have seen how fictional superheroes transition from being regular people at home or in their workspace, to somehow being capable of saving the world as they know it. Have you noticed what happens when they discover their superpowers? They don’t believe in themselves within the first few days or even weeks until they are sure they have explored those powers to an extent.

There is almost always one person in their lives who believes in them and pushes them whenever they feel like they are slowly giving up and even attracting the danger coming from the villains. When we come across people we admire as leaders, we see certain traits that leave us wondering, how did they get to that point? What’s their story?

However, we cannot build up those traits without getting some form of support and mentorship to get there. As much as leaders build others, they also need to build themselves to get a win-win situation altogether. In addition to strong beliefs, leaders should also consider

1.      Imbibing Integrity: This refers to the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness. It is important that leaders mean what they say and also say what they mean. Consistent integrity breeds trust generally. Customers trust clients more, Bosses trust subordinates and can count on each other more.

2.      Adopting technological/ digital trends and improving on them: it’s high time for Leaders especially to constantly follow trends that benefit them and the businesses they have built; only then can everyone stay relevant and essential in their workspaces.

3.       Constantly reviewing and re-evaluating work values: This is important because things change every day and change is the only constant. Have meetings with your team members to ensure they understand the benefits of living and working by those values; within and outside the workspace.

4.      Developing on Individual strengths and build the teamwork spirit: Every person thrives in certain ways. It is up to you as a leader to recognize those ways and build on them. In the end, you promote individual strengths and these persons develop into excellent team members.
